Membrane System Retrofit and Alternative Module Replacement at Two Water Plants

Mill Creek Water Treatment Plant UF Replacement Project and Pandora Water Treatment Plant Alternative Membrane Evaluation and Upgrades

Client:
Town of Telluride, Colorado

Project Overview:
The Town of Telluride operates two ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration drinking water plants: the Mill Creek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the Pandora WTP. The Mill Creek WTP UF system had reached the end of its’ operation life and required replacement. An evaluation was completed comparing multiple manufacturers to replace the existing UF system. A new manufacturer was selected to replace the 1.0 million gallon per day system and ancillaries. KMS performed the process design to replace the system and integrate the new equipment into the existing building in a design/build construction partnership.  KMS also provided startup assistance and is presently providing on-going process support and training to the Town operations staff for the WTP.

The Pandora WTP is a direct filtration drinking water plant utilizing microfiltration. The membrane modules had reached the end of their life due to unforeseen conditions in the raw water which fouled the membranes. KMS assisted the Town in evaluating alternative membrane modules to the original manufacturer and provide process expertise during the retrofit of the new product. The project included upgrades to the WTP and controls system. KMS is presently providing operational support to the Pandora WTP for the new MF modules and additional design services for the waste systems.

“Karla Kinser’s expertise and knowledge of membranes is unmatched. Karla spent weeks with our team of operators at two remote drinking water facilities, providing hands-on training and problem-solving techniques. She gave us the tools that we needed to successfully run new membrane facilities so that we could confidently show our leaders that we were responsibly operating and maintaining multi-million-dollar projects. Her attention to detail is what our facility needed during start-ups and equipment failures. In addition, Karla tailored some training sessions that met us at the knowledge base that our operators have. She has patience while working with diverse personalities within groups. I cannot recommend Karla Kinser highly enough!”
